Science Lab Rules

The following rules were devised for two reasons:

  1. To insure the physical safety of all in the lab.
  2. To reduce breakage and loss of equipment or lab materials.

AT ALL TIMES

  1. Maintain a focused attitude at all time: do not run, fool around, or throw objects in the lab.

  1. Never eat or drink in the science labs. Avoid touching your face, eyes or mouth while working in the lab (unless otherwise directed by the teacher). Wash your hands with soap and water after handling chemicals, cultures, plants, or animals.

  1. Always conduct your experiments with someone else present and with adult supervision.

  1. Do not use chipped or cracked glassware or damaged lab equipments (electrical or other). Give it to your teacher.

  1. Report all broken glass or damaged equipment to your teacher immediately. Do not attempt to clean up broken glass yourself or repair damaged equipment on your own.

  1. Report all accidents to your teacher immediately.

  1. Make sure to use the appropriate equipment for the experiment as instructed by the teacher.

  1. Never perform unauthorized procedures. Always check with your teacher before trying anything different than instructed.

  1. Always read carefully all the instructions during assigned activities. Ask teacher for clarification.

  1. Always keep your work area clean and well organized.

WHEN USING CHEMICALS OR BURNERS OR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT/TOOLS/MACHINES OR BIOHAZARD MATERIALS

  1. Tie back long hair and roll up sleeves when working with flames or chemicals or electrical tools/machines.

  1. Wear goggles when using chemicals, when burners are in use, when dissecting animal parts or conducting an experiment that requires the use of goggles as instructed by the teacher.

  1. Wear gloves when using biohazard materials or dangerous chemicals to protect your skin and prevent contamination.

  1. Keep any materials that will burn easily away from open flames or other heat sources. Keep scarf or long hanging piece of clothing away from tools. Keep focused on your electrical set-up at all time as applicable.

  1. If using HOT equipment, make sure to use proper handling care.

  1. Make sure that nothing, such as gas, electricity, or electrical equipment, is left on when not in use.

  1. Dispose of all chemicals, plants or animal products properly. Pour acid into water (a comes before w) and not water into acid.

  1. Recycle all lab materials as appropriate.
